AmpSize

AS/NZS 3012:2019

AmpSize reads this standard for electrical work on a construction site or a demolition site. It covers the supply arrangements allowed there, the RCD protection and the periodic verification intervals. It also covers how long a site cord or cable may run. That run counts the lead of a plug-in, portable socket-outlet assembly, 2 m at most. Every value AmpSize takes from it was read from the rendered pages of the 2019 edition incorporating Amendment 1. Against the 2010 edition AmpSize read before, the figures hold; Table 3 becomes Table 6, Table 2 becomes Table 7, Section 3 renumbers, and a New Zealand only exception joins Cl 2.4.6.1.

Clauses (11)

  • Socket-outlets on a site switchboard

The site supply tool reports the least number of socket-outlets a construction site switchboard carries, from this clause.

  • Site isolating switch marking

The site supply tool reports the height of the marking on an isolating switch, from this clause.

  • Additional protection for a site under construction or demolition

The construction site supply tool works to this clause. It reports the 30 mA requirement for final sub-circuits, where the device may sit, and the exceptions for mechanical risk, SELV or PELV, and a safety isolating transformer. A fourth exception, a 110 V centre-tapped transformer, holds in New Zealand only.

  • Site flexible cords

The site cord length tool states the smallest conductor in a flexible cord on a site. It also states that each cord carries its own earth conductor.

    Tools that read it:

    Site cord length calculator.

  • Site cord extension sets

The site cord length tool states the cable a cord extension set on a site uses: heavy duty sheathed cable.

    Tools that read it:

    Site cord length calculator.

  • The site cord length tool warns against double adaptors and piggyback adaptors on a site, from this clause.

    Tools that read it:

    Site cord length calculator.

  • Cord and cable length limit on a site

The site cord length tool works to this clause. It looks up the Table 1 limit for the rated current, conductor size, core count and use. It adds any PSOA supply lead to the length. It also says the table's voltage drop adds to the drop in the fixed wiring.

    Tools that read it:

    Site cord length calculator.

  • Joined extension sets on a site

The site cord length tool reads this clause when the cord is made of joined sets. It adds every set to one length and checks that total against the Table 1 limit. A total past the limit fails against this clause. The tool then says one set is the better choice.

    Tools that read it:

    Site cord length calculator.

  • PSOA supply lead counted in the cord length

The site cord length tool shows the lead that feeds a PSOA as its own step, 2 m at most under this item, and adds it to the length it checks. The 2010 edition counted that lead in the Table 1 length in a note the 2019 edition does not print, and AmpSize still counts it.

    Tools that read it:

    Site cord length calculator.

  • New Zealand record of assessment

The site supply tool reads this clause for New Zealand. A site completes the Appendix G record after the periodic assessment.

  • Verification of RCDs on site

The construction site supply tool reports the two tests this clause names: the in-built push-button test, and an operating time test to AS/NZS 3760. The intervals come from Table 6. The 2010 edition numbered this clause 3.5.

Tables (4)

  • Permitted supply arrangements for a site under construction or demolition

The construction site supply tool reads the supply arrangements allowed on a site, the rated residual current each one calls for, and which arrangements may supply only a separated circuit.

  • RCD protection and periodic verification intervals for a site under construction or demolition

The construction site supply tool reads the RCD requirement for the circuit and the periodic verification intervals of Table 6, including the note that the transportable structure intervals do not apply in New Zealand.

    Verified: read against the printed standard, pages 15-17, 19-20, 25, 35-37, 44. Checked 1 Oct 2026.

  • Maximum cord and cable lengths for construction sites

The site cord length tool reads the length limit for the rated current and conductor size. Each row gives four figures: general or specific use, each as a single phase and a three phase length.

Verified: read against the printed standard, pages 24. Checked 1 Oct 2026.

  • Minimum insulation resistance for arc welders incorporated into generating sets

The construction site supply tool reads the minimum insulation resistance for an arc welder incorporated into a generating set. It reports these values only for that case.
