What's new

Every release, newest first. A change to a calculator result is named under its release. Follow the Atom feed to hear of the next one.

  1. v52

    Trust and reading

    • Guides, learn pages, docs, compare pages and tools carry a "Was this useful" strip.
    • Every result and every standards entry has a "Report a wrong value" link.
    • The changelog lists each release, with an Atom feed at /feed.xml.
    • The contact page states a reply within two working days, NZ time.
    • A status page shows whether the site is running.
    • A welcome email is sent after your first sign-in.
    • A browser that opens a refused download now sees a plain page instead of raw error text.
  2. v50

Wayfinding, safer inputs and a tasks page

    Changes a result

Single phase at a line voltage is now an error with a one-tap fix. Number fields no longer read text as a number.

    • The Tasks page filters by trade and text. Each tool page lists its tasks above the calculator, and a Try a job section starts closed.
    • About 285 more one-tap tasks were added across cables, protection, loads, safety, solar, earthing, testing, fire and regulatory work.
    • Search handles trade synonyms and indexes guide questions. The 404 page offers search and likely pages.
    • Guides, learn pages, docs and compare pages have heading anchors, a Copy link button and a reading time. From 1440 px they have an On this page rail.
    • The menu reaches Docs, Compare, About and the app, and the footer is a four-column sitemap.
    • Each tool and guide shows its edition line. Print sheets drop the site chrome.
    • A skip link starts every page, and the site has a web app manifest.
    • Loop impedance and conduit fill state their verdict as a check row, and every field hint now shows.
  3. v49

    Groundwork for six languages

    • This release built the tools for translation. The site does not yet offer another language.
    • The planned languages are simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Hindi, Filipino and te reo Maori.
    • Calculator steps and warnings now use message templates, with the English wording unchanged.
    • A script finds every string on the site. The release check fails when the English list is out of date.
    • Translated pages, language routes and the phone app translation were not part of what was merged.
  4. v48

New calculators for derating, faults, solar and power factor

    Changes a result

Three tools changed. EV charger checks spare capacity, Arc flash offers IEEE 1584-2018, and Test and tag reads AS/NZS 3760:2022.

    • The Correction factors calculator applies AS/NZS 3008.1 ambient, grouping, soil and harmonic factors and shows the result.
    • The Circuit check calculator runs the five cable checks on a cable size you already installed.
    • The Fault level calculator finds prospective fault current at a board from a transformer or a typed supply.
    • The PV string sizing calculator follows AS/NZS 5033:2021. The Home battery calculator applies the AS/NZS 5139:2019 location rules.
    • The Power factor correction calculator sizes the capacitor bank under AS/NZS 3000 Cl 4.15.
    • The Voltage drop calculator has a d.c. mode. Earlier a.c. results are unchanged.
    • Arc flash offers the IEEE 1584-2018 model. Links saved earlier keep the 2002 model.
    • New guides and learn pages cover the new tools.
  5. v47

Tables read against print, and checks as rows

    Changes a result

Wet area zones changed for a bath or a spa up to 680 L. A second read of the print showed that Zone 1 rises above a higher connection.

    • AS/NZS 1680.1:2006 Table 3.1 was read against print and marked verified. Table 3.2 stays under review because one value prints as "10.1".
    • AS/NZS 4282:2023 Tables 3.1 to 3.4 and AS/NZS 1158.1.2:2010 Table 14.4 were read again against print. They are now verified.
    • The AS/NZS 3000 Section 6 zone and RCD tables were verified, with three page and figure corrections. AS/NZS 3002:2021 show and carnival values were verified.
    • Seven tables stay marked derived. Each notes what is missing, and the standards hub shows the status.
    • The Checks block is a list: a mark, the check name, its state and its margin. The check that sets the size is labelled.
    • Steps show each clause on the right, and the PDF prints the same checks.
  6. v46

Compare pages and links between pages

    • The Compare hub has one table of calculators, guides, standards edition, price and PDF export. Each page also says where another tool is the better choice.
    • The jCalc comparison names the 2025 Australian edition the Cable size calculator opens on.
    • Sixty-three guides and learn pages now end with a See also paragraph of related links.
    • The cable size pages name the search term once in the title and description. The tools index names both variants.
    • The content editor can suggest three related links in one click.
    • The editor now blocks deleting a media file that a live page uses.
  7. v45

Shared plans on the phone app

    • The Android app draws a shared plan from its link, with layers, pan and pinch. It cannot edit the plan.
    • The shared plan page for a link has a bare layout without the site header.
    • The Build page orders its builders and presets by your trade profile and has a Construction site row.
    • A person's own GPO count per room use sits beside the labour rate.
    • The plan quote can carry a margin line and a default GST rate.
  8. v44

Outdoor light, wet areas and drawing exchange

    • The Obtrusive light calculator estimates light at a boundary window and checks it against AS/NZS 4282:2023 limits. It is a point-source estimate, and a site measurement rules.
    • The Wet area zones calculator reads AS/NZS 3000 Section 6 for twelve situations. The plan draws each fixture's zones on the canvas, the sheets and the isometric view.
    • The plan's Power step names wet-room fixtures and suggests no light or power point in Zones 0 to 2.
    • A floor exports as a DXF for free. Import a floor reads DXF rooms on Pro.
    • The underlay now prints faintly under the plan sheets, and the isometric view prints on its own A3 sheet.
    • The calculation PDF and the project PDF now print Page n of N on every page.
    • The Site supply tool and its tables now cite AS/NZS 3012:2019 where the 2019 text was read.
    • New guides cover a bathroom layout, a car-park floodlight and a builder's pole.
  9. v43

Wiring the house end to end in the plan

    • A placed sub-board becomes a board. The plan draws its submain from the main board.
    • A room can be fed from a chosen board, and its devices count to that board.
    • A supply point can be placed, and Make circuits runs inside the guide and shows a panel schedule.
    • A device can be pinned to a circuit. Compute keeps the pin and warns when a circuit has more points than it can take.
    • Every calculator now has a task entry that opens it on a worked example.
    • The Run menu on a device lists the calculators for that device, such as an EV charger or a board.
    • A luminaire's mount height can be typed, and a catalogue part supplies its lumens, watts and beam. The maintenance factor can come from AS/NZS 1158.1.2 Table 14.4.
    • Phone fixes cover clipped drawings, cramped legends, 44 px touch targets and chip rows.
  10. v42

Lighting, the guided house and the light layer

    • The Lighting lumen calculator uses target lux by room use, working plane, room index, utilisation and maintenance factor. It gives a count, a grid and three checks.
    • The lux values come from AS/NZS 1680.1:2006 Tables 3.1 and 3.2. The tool marks them as under review until the printed pages are read.
    • The plan builder guide covers rooms, lights, switches, power, board and sheets. It opens by itself on an empty plan.
    • The Switch tool draws a switch-to-light arc. It prints on the lighting sheet.
    • The light layer shades each room against its own target and falls back to coverage rings without WebGL2.
    • The plan now edits on a phone, with one-finger pan and two-finger pinch.
    • Sheets mark each device with its circuit way, and the legend shows socket mount heights.
    • You can export a floor as JSON, export a drawing as SVG, and import a floor.
  11. v41

    Privacy-friendly page counts

    • The site now counts page views without cookies, local storage or a banner. It records the page, the referring site, device type, browser family, screen size band and country or city.
    • The privacy page has a new section describing the page counts.
    • A page left open during an update could fail when you saved. Updates now keep the same internal keys, so open tabs keep working.
    • The nightly search engine notice now tries three IndexNow endpoints in turn instead of retrying the same one.
    • The guides index no longer pushes a three-line title below the fold on a phone.
  12. v40

    Home tasks and clearer checks

    • The home page now shows task entries that open a calculator with a real job already filled in.
    • A notice on a calculator says when the figures on screen are example values.
    • The Cable size and Voltage drop calculators state the basis of the result. They mark the check that sets the size.
    • Each check reads Checked, Fails or Not assessed, from the calculator itself. The checks sit in a third column.
    • The menu groups tools by category in collapsible sections, and a keyboard Tab trap in the menu was fixed.
    • The sign-in links on the Pricing page and the wizard follow the same pattern as the rest of the site.
  13. v39

    Search engine submission

    • This release changed how the site tells Bing about new and updated pages. It did not change anything a visitor sees.
    • The nightly job reads Bing's remaining daily quota first and sends the newest pages first, up to that quota.
    • The IndexNow route still returned an error from Bing for this site, so Bing's own submission route carried the work.
  14. v38

Result panel layout and page width

    • Labels and values in the result panel and the steps share one layout. A long value sits under its label.
    • The main result scales by length. A figure stays large, and a name or a sentence is smaller.
    • The page width limit rose from 1680 px to 2400 px. A 1920 px window shows three calculator columns. Guides and other reading pages keep their narrower line length.
    • The home page title and description now name the cable size calculator and AS/NZS 3008.
    • The five NZ-only tools have descriptions that name New Zealand and their standard or regulation.
    • The questions on the five most-searched tools are written as people type them, and each answer starts with the answer.
    • Search no longer loses a letter typed quickly just as the dialog opens.
