AmpSize

NZS 4512:2010

The New Zealand standard for fire alarm and detection systems. AmpSize uses it for the sound pressure level an audible alerting device must reach. AmpSize reads that level for a room, a bedhead and a balcony. It also reads the ambient level that calls for a visual alerting device.

Clauses (15)

  • Battery charger

The fire alarm battery tool reports the charger current that restores the capacity inside the period this clause gives, and the float voltage and its tolerance for the number of cells.

    Tools that read it:

    Fire alarm battery calculator.

  • Rechargeable batteries

The fire alarm battery tool works to this clause. It reads the standby period from whether a remote receiving centre monitors the system, then adds the alarm period. Both periods are minimums. So the tool builds a floor capacity, before the factors, on the longer of the clause alarm period and yours. It never reports less than that floor.

    Tools that read it:

    Fire alarm battery calculator.

  • Standby battery capacity

The fire alarm battery tool sizes the standby battery from this clause. It adds the standby load over the standby period to the alarm load over the alarm period. Then it applies the factors.

    Tools that read it:

    Fire alarm battery calculator.

  • Battery service life

The fire alarm battery tool reports the least service life of the battery, from this clause. It sizes the capacity only, so check the battery type yourself.

    Tools that read it:

    Fire alarm battery calculator.

  • The detector spacing tool compares the floor area you enter with the zone limit and names the cases that extend it.

  • Fire alarm cable

The fire alarm cabling tool reads the smallest conductor size and the stranding threshold from this clause. The clause names detector, alerting device and loudspeaker circuits. So the tool reports no size for a circuit it does not name.

    Tools that read it:

    Fire alarm cabling lookup.

  • Fire alarm cable installation

The fire alarm cabling tool reads the insulation resistance criterion, the two fire ratings and the supply subcircuit label from the paragraphs of this clause, and names the paragraph each figure comes from.

    Tools that read it:

    Fire alarm cabling lookup.

  • Detector distance from a wall

The detector spacing tool keeps each detector the distance this clause sets from a wall or partition.

  • Detector position, wall minimum and beams

The detector spacing tool reads the 500 mm limit below a roof apex and the 200 mm wall minimum. It also reads the beam and joist rules. They cut the spacing across the beams to two thirds, or make each beam count as a wall.

  • Detector spacing

The detector spacing tool works to this clause. It reads the spacing and wall distance for the detector type, applies the corridor values where the space is a corridor, and reports the grid and the count. For the line heat and beam smoke types the clause states a distance from a line or a beam and no wall distance, so the tool reports no wall figure for those two and sets the layout back the 200 mm minimum that Cl 405.2.1(l) states for any detector.

  • Sound level limits

The sounder level tool works to this clause. It reports the margin over the residual level, the 65 dB to 100 dB band and the higher level that applies at a bedhead or on an occupiable balcony.

  • Visual alerting device trigger

The sounder level tool reports whether the ambient level or ear protection worn calls for a visual alerting device under this clause.

  • Number of alerting devices

The sounder level tool reminds you to check the number of alerting devices for the system against this clause.

  • Care area alerting device

The sounder level tool reports the margin above ambient for a low level sounder in a care area under this clause.

  • Fire alarm monthly checks

The assessment interval tool reads this clause on its fire alarm branch. The figure it reports is a cadence, not a maximum, so the tool labels it differently from a reg 75 interval. Cl 603 sets the annual cadence.

    Tools that read it:

    Periodic assessment intervals.

Tables (5)

  • Fire alarm standby battery periods, cell voltages and test criterion

The fire alarm battery tool reads the two standby periods, the alarm period, the recharge period, the float voltage and its tolerance, the current limit voltage, the nominal cell voltage, the service life and the three monthly test figures, from Clauses 211.5, 212, 213 and 602.7. The periods are minimum periods, so the tool holds a minimum capacity before the factors and never reports less than that figure.

  • Cl 402

Fire alarm cable and circuit requirements

The fire alarm cabling tool reads one row per circuit type. Each row holds the smallest conductor size for two cores and for more than two, and the stranding threshold. It also holds the insulation resistance criterion, the AS/NZS 3013 fire rating and integrity time, and the supply subcircuit label. A null size means Clause 402.1 sets none for that circuit.

    Tools that read it:

    Fire alarm cabling lookup.

  • Detector spacing, wall distance and coverage

The detector spacing tool reads one row per detector type. Each row holds the spacing, the corridor spacing, the wall distance and the corridor wall distance. It holds the floor area per detector and the longest distance from any point to a detector, line or beam. Last is the limit below the apex of a sloping roof. A null wall distance means Clause 405.3 states none for that type.

  • Cl 406

    Alerting device sound pressure levels

The sounder level tool reads the 10 dB and 5 dB margins over the residual level, the 65 dB to 100 dB band, the bedhead and balcony levels, the 90 dB visual device trigger, the care area margin and the measurement height, from Clauses 406.3, 406.4 and 406.7.

Verified: read against the printed standard, pages 62-63. Checked 26 Sept 2026.

  • Fire alarm monthly and annual check intervals

The assessment interval tool reads the monthly and annual check cadence from Clauses 602 and 603. Two rows only, each carrying its interval in months and its clause number.

Verified: read against the printed standard, pages 73-76. Checked 26 Sept 2026.
