Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010
The New Zealand regulations that sit above the wiring rules. AmpSize uses the demand thresholds and the certificate and record periods they carry, to show which work pathway an installation takes and which certificate the work needs.

Low-risk, high-risk and general prescribed electrical work
The regulatory pathway tool sorts a job into one of these three categories from the work you describe. It names the regulation and reports the numbers that regulation carries. It gives no ruling.
Tools that read it:
Electrically unsafe RCDs
The RCD selection tool tests a measured trip time against this regulation. It reports the maximum rated residual current for the duty and the trip limits at the rated current and at five times the rated current.

Exemption for domestic electrical wiring work
The regulatory pathway tool reports the maximum demand threshold this regulation carries, 80 A per phase single-phase or 50 A per phase multi-phase. It states whether the demand you entered is at or below that threshold, or that the regulation does not reach an installation you did not mark as domestic.

Part 1 and Part 2 designs
The maximum demand tool watches this threshold. A demand above it takes the installation out of Part 2 of the standard. The tool raises a note so the designer knows a certified Part 1 design is needed.
Tools that read it:
Record of inspection
The regulatory pathway tool reports whether the work needs a record of inspection, from this regulation.
Tools that read it:
Periodic assessment of installations
The assessment interval tool reads this regulation. It names the installation, reports the interval reg 75(1) states for it, and says so in words where the regulation states none. The record period comes from reg 75(4)(d). The tool is a pointer and rules on nothing.
Tools that read it:
Periodic assessment interval for a carnival or fair ground
The show and carnival tool reads the reg 75(1)(d) row from the reg 75 table. It states the maximum interval and the standard for the assessment, and stops. It shows the interval for New Zealand only.
Tools that read it:
Supply to hand-held appliances
The hand-held supply tool reads this regulation with reg 89 and reg 89A. It names the regulation for the situation you pick and lists the arrangements it sets out. The voltage figure it prints is the reg 88(2) figure measured to earth, and no other. The tool is a pointer and rules on nothing.

Rated residual current and trip time limits for RCDs
The RCD selection tool reads the maximum rated residual current and the two trip time limits for the protection duty of the device. A measured trip time is compared with those limits.

Tools that read it:
RCD selection calculator, Test results checker and Test schedule for a switchboard.
Thresholds and periods for prescribed electrical work
The regulatory pathway tool reads the demand thresholds of regulations 57 and 59, and the periods of regulations 65, 74C and 74E. The rows carry numbers and regulation numbers only.
Verified: read against the printed standard, pages 55, 57, 61-62, 71-73. Checked 26 Sept 2026.

Periodic assessment intervals for special installations
The assessment interval tool reads one row per installation reg 75(1) names: the paragraph, the interval in years where the paragraph states one, the standard the assessment is made against, the subclause that names the assessor, and the record period. A null interval means the paragraph states none, and the tool says so in words.
Verified: read against the printed standard, pages 76-77. Checked 26 Sept 2026.
Tools that read it:
Periodic assessment intervals and Show and carnival wiring checker.
Supply arrangements listed for hand-held appliances
The hand-held supply tool reads one row per situation: the regulation that covers it, and the arrangements it lists with the paragraph number of each. The only voltage figure the rows carry is measured to earth. reg 89(1)(a), reg 89(2)(a), reg 89(2)(f) and reg 89A(1)(a) rest on a voltage between conductors, and AmpSize publishes no figure on that basis.
