AS/NZS 5139:2019
The standard for installing battery systems with power conversion equipment. The home battery tool reads its Section 4 location rules for an all-in-one home battery. The battery location check measures a site against each of them. Amendment 1 (2025) is not held, so check it for changes.

Clauses (14)
Battery arc flash energy
The battery arc flash tool works the incident energy from the battery voltage, half the bolted fault current, the arcing time, the working distance and the multiplying factor, and the boundary where it falls to 1.2 cal/cm².
Tools that read it:
Arc duration for a battery
The battery class tool takes the arc to last 2 s in two cases. The device time is unknown, or the work is on its battery side.
Tools that read it:
Arc flash multiplying factor
The battery class tool applies this multiplying factor to the incident energy for a battery in an enclosure.
Tools that read it:
Restricted locations for a home battery
The home battery tool fails the places this clause rules out for an all-in-one battery. It lists the clearances from exits, windows, vents and other appliances. The battery location check measures each one.
Tools that read it:
Battery location by risk assessment
The battery location check tells you to find the place by a risk assessment. It keeps the battery inside the maker’s temperature range and away from heat.
Tools that read it:
IP rating of a home battery
The home battery tool names the least IP code for a battery outdoors or on a veranda. The battery location check compares the battery’s own code with it.
Tools that read it:
Barrier to a habitable room
The home battery tool gives the extent of the non-combustible barrier when the battery sits on a wall to a habitable room. The battery location check also checks the ceiling within 900 mm.
Tools that read it:
Working space at a home battery
The home battery tool notes the clear space on the working side, and the larger space where a.c. connections are reached. The battery location check takes the maker’s clearance where it is larger.
Tools that read it:
Smoke alarm or detector at a home battery
The battery location check notes a detector linked to the fire panel, or a smoke alarm in the battery’s room. The clause says should.
Tools that read it:
Ventilation of a home battery
The battery location check points to the maker’s ventilation instructions, which this clause makes the rule.
Tools that read it:
Arc flash limits for a home battery
The battery arc flash tool checks a home system below 40 cal/cm², and above 4 cal/cm² names a dedicated room or enclosure, or fire hazard level 1. Outside, it checks 8 cal/cm².
Tools that read it:
Battery arc flash incident energy
The battery class tool computes the d.c. arc flash incident energy with this equation.
Tools that read it:
Battery arcing current
The battery class tool takes the arcing current as half the bolted fault current, with this equation.
Tools that read it:
Battery arc flash boundary
The battery class tool computes the arc flash boundary distance with this equation.

Tables (2)
Location, clearance and barrier rules for a pre-assembled integrated BESS
The home battery tool and the battery location check read the places an all-in-one battery must not go, and the clearance, barrier, IP and access figures. Amendment 1 (2025) is not held.
Verified: read against the printed standard, pages 34-37 (PDF 42-45). Checked 1 Oct 2026.
Tools that read it:
Battery system hazard classes, decisive voltage class, arc flash energy, PPE level and consequence level
The battery arc flash tool reads the hazards and fire level of each chemistry, the decisive voltage classes, the PPE levels and consequence levels by energy, the home limits, and the Appendix F rows its equation reproduces.
Verified: read against the printed standard, pages 25-29, 97, 140-144 (PDF = printed page + 8). Checked 1 Oct 2026.
