About this calculator

How this is calculated

The tool points to the New Zealand regulation that applies to a job. It reads the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010. It does not read a Standard.

  1. Work category. The tool reads the work type and who does it. It names the category of work, such as general prescribed electrical work (reg 6A).
  2. Certificate of compliance. It says whether the work needs a certificate of compliance (reg 65).
  3. Record of inspection. It says whether the work needs a record of inspection (reg 70).
  4. Timing. It gives the days to issue an electrical safety certificate after connection (reg 74C). It gives the days to send a copy of the certificate of compliance. It also gives how long to keep it (reg 74E).
  5. Standard. It names the Standard that reg 59 sets for this installation.
  6. Homeowner threshold. For a homeowner, it compares your demand per phase with the reg 57 threshold.

Limits

  • The tool points at the regulation. It is not a ruling and it is not advice. Read the current reprint.
  • Regs 74A and 74B say which work a safety certificate covers. The tool names the timing only.
  • Reg 74E(2A) covers a small stand-alone dwelling that has no consent. It states no period for the copy.
  • The tool is for New Zealand. It has no Australian pathway.

Questions

Each answer describes what this tool calculates. The result is a design aid. Verify against the current standard.

Is this tool legal advice?

No. The tool is a pointer, not a ruling. It names the regulation that lists the work and reports the numbers that regulation carries. It does not tell you what you may do. Read the current reprint of the regulations and ask WorkSafe or a licensed inspector.

What does the tool report?

The work category under regulation 6A, whether regulation 65 lists a certificate of compliance, whether regulation 70 lists a record of inspection, the 20 working day period of regulation 74C, and the demand thresholds of regulations 57 and 59.

Which edition of the regulations does it use?

The version as at 15 January 2026. The figures the tool reports are the same in the 4 April 2016 reprint. Check for a later version on the New Zealand legislation website before you rely on any result.
