How this is calculated

The tool finds how many luminaires a room needs. It uses the lumen method. The target lux comes from AS/NZS 1680.1:2006 where that Standard lists the room use.

  1. Room and plane. The tool finds the floor area. It reads the target illuminance and the working plane height for the room use (Tables 3.1 and 3.2).
  2. Room index. It works out K = L × W / (Hm × (L + W)). Hm is the luminaire height above the working plane.
  3. Utilisation factor. It reads a typical factor for the room index and the reflectances you pick. You can type your own factor from the maker's table.
  4. Maintenance factor. It uses the value you give. The helper reads the luminaire factor from Table 14.4 of AS/NZS 1158.1.2:2010. You type the lamp lumen factor.
  5. Number of luminaires. N = E × A / (Φ × UF × MF). The tool rounds up to a grid that fits the room shape.
  6. Check. It works the lux the grid gives, the spacing to height ratio and the lighting power density.

Limits

  • For a living room and some other uses, the target is a typical design value. It is not a Standard value. Check it against your brief.
  • The utilisation factor is typical for a direct luminaire. Use the maker's table when you have it.
  • The tool does not model glare, uniformity or a photometric file. It does not replace a lighting design programme.
  • The grid is an even layout. A room with obstructions or a feature may need a different layout.
  • The tool does not read AS/NZS 3008 and has no edition select.

Ka whakamahi rātou me ngā wāhi o waho i ngā uara arorau, ā, ka kī te taputapu pēnei. Ko te 240 lx a Table 3.1 mō te whakarite kai mahi anake.

He aha te utilisation factor?
