How this is calculated
You list the final subcircuits on one switchboard. For each circuit you give what it supplies, its rating and the RCD it sits on. An RCBO is an RCD with one circuit, so give each RCBO its own number. A circuit on no RCD has the number 0.
First the tool asks, circuit by circuit, whether the clauses call for additional protection by an RCD, and at what rated residual current. It reads the same rows as the RCD selection tool. In New Zealand homes that is every circuit that supplies socket‑outlets, lighting points or hand-held equipment. In Australian homes it is every final subcircuit. Schools, childcare, outdoor and public places and other buildings follow their own items. A circuit that needs an RCD and sits on none fails.
Then it groups the circuits by RCD and checks the arrangement clause. In every installation with more than one RCD and more than one lighting circuit, the lighting circuits must be on more than one RCD, so one trip does not put out every light. In a residential installation, one RCD may protect three final subcircuits at most. Every circuit on that RCD counts, even one that would not need it. A residential board with more than one circuit that needs an RCD must have at least two RCDs.
The result lists each circuit, each RCD with its count, and the four checks with their clause.
| Step | Table or clause | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Which circuits need an RCD, New Zealand | Cl 2.6.3.3.1 and Cl 2.6.3.3.2 | The circuits that must be on an RCD, and its rated residual current |
| Which circuits need an RCD, Australia | Cl 2.6.3.2.2 and Cl 2.6.3.2.3.3 | The same for an Australian installation |
| Lighting spread | Cl 2.6.2.4(a) | Lighting circuits on more than one RCD |
| Circuits on one RCD | Cl 2.6.2.4(b)(i) | The most final subcircuits one residential RCD may protect |
| Number of RCDs | Cl 2.6.2.4(b)(ii) | The fewest RCDs on a residential board |
Worked examples
- A house board with four circuits on RCD 1. The arrangement fails: 4 on the fullest RCD, one more than a residential RCD may protect. Move one circuit to RCD 2.
- A larger house on three RCDs. The arrangement passes every check, with 3 on the fullest RCD and a lighting circuit on each RCD. The car charger counts as one of the three on RCD 3.
- An Australian home of RCBOs. The arrangement passes every check, with 1 on the fullest RCD. Every final subcircuit needs an RCD in an Australian home, the oven and water heater too, and each has its own.
- An office with both lighting circuits on RCD 1. The arrangement fails the lighting spread, with 3 on the fullest RCD. The count limit does not apply outside a residential installation, but the lighting spread does.
Limits
The tool checks one board. It takes each socket‑outlet as 10 A; use the RCD selection tool for a larger socket‑outlet, a trip time or a device type. It does not check the exceptions in Cl 2.6.3, such as a dedicated cooking socket‑outlet or equipment where a trip is more dangerous. It does not check discrimination between RCDs, or standing leakage on one RCD.

Kāore he tepe tatau i taua clause mō ētahi atu whakaurunga.
Me rua RCD te whare?
Āe, ina neke atu i tētahi final subcircuit e hiahia ana i te whakamaru RCD. Ka tono a Cl 2.6.2.4 mō te iti rawa e rua RCD i tētahi whakaurunga kāinga, nō reira kāore e pōuri te whare katoa i tētahi trip kotahi.
He aha te horapa i te rama ki ngā RCD?
Kia kore ai e pōuri te whare katoa i te trip o tētahi RCD. Ina neke atu i tētahi RCD, neke atu i tētahi ara iahiko rama te papa, ka tukuna ngā ara iahiko rama ki ngā RCD rerekē. Ka pā tēnei ki ia whakaurunga.
Me pēhea e tatau ai te RCBO?
He RCD kotahi ara iahiko te RCBO. Hoatu ki ia RCBO tōna ake nama RCD i te rārangi. Ka tutuki i tētahi papa RCBO te ture e toru ia RCD me te whakahora rama i a ia anō.
Ko ēhea ngā ara iahiko e hiahia ana i tētahi RCD?
Ka whakamahi te taputapu i te whakautu ōrite ki te taputapu RCD selection, mai i Cl 2.6.3. I ngā kāinga NZ, ko ngā socket‑outlet, ko te rama me ngā ara hand-held. I ngā kāinga AU, ko ia final subcircuit. Ka whai ngā whakaurunga kē i ō rātou ake mea.

- RCD arrangement for a house boardCheck a New Zealand house board of eight circuits on two RCDs. See what fails with a fourth circuit on one RCD or both lights on one, and the AU change.
Kōrero o muri
- How many circuits can go on one RCDThe AS/NZS 3000 Cl 2.6.2.4 arrangement rules in plain words, which circuits need a 30 mA RCD in NZ and AU homes, how RCBOs count, and why the rules exist.
- RCD leakage and nuisance trippingWhy an RCD trips with no fault. Where standing leakage comes from, the one-third and one-half points of Cl 2.6.2.1, class limits against measured figures.
