Does a house need a surge protective device?
In New Zealand, AS/NZS 3000 Section 2.7.3 is applied as a recommendation unless the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 call for one. In Australia a new house takes a recommendation too, unless an overvoltage there would affect human life, public services, commerce or many people. AmpSize states this as derived.
When is a surge protective device mandatory in Australia?
Amendment 2 to AS/NZS 3000:2018 made it mandatory for a new installation where the consequences of an overvoltage affect human life, public services or cultural heritage, commercial or industrial activity, or a large number of co-located people. The tool reads those four cases.
Why does the tool say derived?
AmpSize has not read Section 2.7.3 from the printed standard, and Amendment 2 is not on hand. The table states the rule as it is commonly reported, and the result carries that mark until the pages are read.
Does an overhead supply change the answer?
Not in the clause the tool reads. An overhead supply is more exposed to lightning surges, so the tool notes it and points to a risk assessment to AS/NZS 1768, which can show the need for a device.
